SMYRNA, Tenn. (WKRN) – Police are investigating a string of skimming cases involving ATMs and gas pumps.
As many as 20 reports are being investigated by the Smyrna Police Department.
“Skimming” is when a rudimentary device meant to look like part of a gas pump or ATM is placed on top of the actual credit card slot.
Victims can’t tell the difference and insert their debit card.

A small camera placed on the machine then records the user entering their PIN.
The business doesn’t know the device is there until there’s a problem.
Then the thief retrieves the information and uses it to make fraudulent purchases.
“Sometimes it’s several thousand dollars’ worth of items they go and purchase,” said Sgt. Bobby Gibson. “It can be online purchases or local stores.”
Police suggest that consumers take a moment to examine gas pumps and ATMs to make sure there are no devices added on.
You should also regularly check your bank statements to spot fraudulent charges.
