BRENTWOOD, Tenn. (WKRN) – Seven Tennessee schools were designated National Blue Ribbon Schools, and this week those principals and teachers were in Washington accepting the honor.

Among the schools was Ravenwood High School, so News 2 caught up with the principal to find out what made it a blue ribbon school.

“I’m excited we won the Blue Ribbon award this year,” said Dr. Pam Vaden. “There were about 300 schools across the nation and after going through the list of schools, I think we were among the 60 high schools that were picked for this award.”

Dr. Vaden said she thinks what sets them apart is about 13 years ago, the small faculty set out to focus on being a collaborative high school

“That gives our teachers the opportunity to work in same subject teams,” she explained. “For instance, the six biology teachers meet every Monday morning. They talk about students; they talk about things they would like to do in common.”

The other schools in the Middle Tennessee area were Trousdale County High School, Clovercroft Elementary in Franklin, and Buchanan Elementary in Rutherford County.
