GREENVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Officials will consider a resolution next week to fly the Confederate flag on top of the Greene County courthouse.

Multiple media outlets report the county commission will take up the resolution at its next meeting on Oct. 19. If approved, the flag will fly next to the American flag.

The resolution was proposed by Commissioner James “Buddy” Randolph and comes during a time in which county residents are divided over the issue.

Supporters say the Confederate flag represents the county’s culture and heritage. The resolution also says the flag honors those Tennesseans who fought in the Civil War, during which time the state had large numbers of both Union and Confederate supporters.

However, some commissioners say they don’t expect the resolution to be well-received.
