Police investigated the woods in the 800 block of 12th Avenue South on Friday afternoon after human remains were found there.

Someone in the neighborhood, near the Park Center South facility at 801 12th Ave. S., found the remains. Police said it is believed the remains may have been those of someone homeless and had been in the area for a while, but the investigation is ongoing.

A forensic team from Middle Tennessee State University and members of the Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office also were present at the scene.

Police said an initial examination of the human skeletal remains revealed “no indication of injury.”

“There was also no indication of a struggle or violence in the immediate area,” police said in a statement Friday afternoon. “The deceased was wearing jeans.  A blanket was also present, suggesting that the person may have died while sleeping.  No identification was located.”

Police said a homeless advocacy worker and a homeless man discovered the remains while looking for a suitable place to set up a camp, and that the Medical Examiner will conduct further testing on the remains.
