MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — For the second straight day, members in Operation Warrior Guard stood outside a military recruiting center in Murfreesboro armed with rifles.
Members are upset that service men and women can’t carry guns in the facility and they believe that rule made the tragedy in Chattanooga last week more deadly.
“I wanna be here to keep them alive if I can,” said Justin Bradburn.
Murfreesboro isn’t the only community with a guard like this.
Concerned civilians in Mt. Juliet, Rivergate, and Gallatin all stood guard Tuesday as well.
“I’m just glad there’s like-minded people like me out there that are willing to step up and do what needs to be done,” said Bradburn.
The question is, do they legally have the right to stand on the sidewalk of a strip mall carrying loaded rifles.
Academy of Personal Protection and Security owner Buford Tune says it isn’t a simple question.
“God bless them for what they’re doing,” said Tune. “If something happens what law are they gonna be abiding and not abiding?”
Tune says as long as the civilian guards have carry permits and the property owner doesn’t mind their side arms are ok.
Tune and gun lobby groups say the laws governing rifles aren’t as clear as they should be.
“You’ve got laws that are contradicting each other and if a police officer wanted to he could charge these people under certain laws but then you’ve got another law that says it’s OK,” said Tune.
That hasn’t happened in Murfreesboro.
Bradburn says police officers have been friendly and he has no plans to disarm until the “no guns allowed sings” come down.
