NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — As the tornado came through Perry County Wednesday night, Kirk Hasten was reminded of one of his most horrific days.

“The most devastating news that anybody could ever receive,” he tells News 2.

It was 1999 when another tornado hit the small town, claiming the life of his mother.

“The entire house was just obliterated,” Hasten explained.

The aftermath left the Hasten family devastated, but the community support was unforgettable.

“After going through that in ’99 and seeing how many people were willing to help me, people I didn’t even know it really has always made me have a soft spot for situations like this to try to get as many people on board to help out,” Hasten said.

With the devastation hitting close to home for Hasten he decided to start a fundraising campaign. As the boys basketball coach at Perry County High School, the teams were the first to donate.

“It’s a great thing to see kids like that lead by example,” said Hasten.

In only a matter of hours, the fundraising site raised more than 10-thousand dollars to help those who were hit the hardest.

Hasten tells News 2 it’s the least he can do for his home town that supported his family during their time of need.

“It’s a heart wrenching thing to see people go through, but it’s a heartwarming thing to see how many people are willing to step up and help others,” he added.
