FRANKLIN, Tenn. (WKRN) – On Monday, police officers from around the state of Tennessee met with officers from Colorado to talk about the impact of legalizing marijuana.

Marijuana for recreational or medical use is illegal in Tennessee, but some state lawmakers have talked about changing that.

The officials from Colorado met with officers in Franklin to discuss the impact legalizing the drug has had on public safety.

“I don’t believe anything good has come out of legalizing marijuana in Colorado,” said Jim Gerhardt with the Colorado Drug Investigators Association.

“Yes, tax revenues are being generated, but there are also deaths; there are accidents. Certainly it costs a lot to regulate marijuana,” Gerhardt added.

Those from Colorado also said they have actually seen an increase in illegal activity because it’s still cheaper to buy from a drug dealer than a legal dispensary.

Last spring, Governor Bill Haslam signed a bill that legalized cannabis oil for medical purposes. Lawmakers are expected to discuss a broader medical marijuana bill next year.
