ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — What started as a typical day for a Texas student ended with an act courage that likely saved her bus driver’s life.

Deerpark Middle School student Courtney Garcia was riding the bus like she does every day – but this trip took a scary turn.

“I heard someone screaming from up there, so I sat up and walked this way,” remembers Garcia. “She was holding her microphone, and I grabbed the microphone and started speaking.”

The bus driver was unresponsive, so Courtney used the two-way radio to call for help.

“One person’s got to step up, and I just chose to do it,” said Garcia. “That was technically my good deed for the day!”

The district says while students are taught how to evacuate the bus during emergencies, they’re not taught on what to do if a driver becomes ill suddenly.

“I’m proud of her quick thinking and response,” said Principal Sonya Hayes. “She made us proud that day.”

Another bus driver, Mr. Johnson, heard the incident over his radio. “I thought Courtney did a fantastic job! It’s good to have kids like that, at the right place at the wrong time.”

While a hero, Garcia is still a humble 8th grader.

The driver thanked her the very next day.

“She said, ‘Thank you so much for saving my life’, and I was like ‘You’re welcome, it was no problem at all’.”

At this time, the district has no formal plans to train students for crisis management situations.
