NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Nashville Fire Department issued a warning to owners of so-called hoverboards after determining that two fires in the Nashville area were caused by the devices.

The first fire occurred on Jan. 9, on Radcliff Drive when fire destroyed the home.

Authorities said a FITURBO F1 hoverboard bust into flames on the home’s first floor. A 16-year-old girl kicked out a window on the second floor of the home and jumped down into her father’s arms. A 14-year-old boy was able to escape the second floor with the help of a ladder.

Both teens received minor injuries and the father was injured while catching his daughter.

The Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office said this is the first confirmed case of a house fire caused by a hoverboard in Tennessee.

The second fire was smaller and investigators said the FITURBO F1 hoverboard came from the same batch as the one that caused the first fire.

The owners of the second hoverboard were friends of the family who lost their home in the Jan. 9 fire.

The second fire began in the device’s battery compartment, according to authorities.

“Today, the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance and the Tennessee State Fire Marshal’s Office renew our strong warning to Tennessee consumers about so-called hoverboard devices becoming potential fire hazards to Tennessee consumers,” said Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance Deputy Commissioner Gary West.

Hoverboard owners are reminded to always use the manufacturer supplied charger and not to leave it unattended while plugged in.

Dozens of fires across the country are under investigation by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
