NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation and Washington Post has ranked Nashville second in 2015 for the highest increase in murders in the nation’s top 50 largest cities.
According to the findings, Nashville’s murder rate rose 83 percent last year from 41 in 2014 to 75.
Of the 75 murders last year, 20 of the victims were teenagers or younger, the highest number of youth deaths to hit Nashville in the past decade.
Among those teens killed, was Natasha Fite’s son, Kenny Hatcher.
She said she had went to get something to eat on August 11, 2015 when she received the phone call that changed her life.
“Waiting on his food, I get a phone call saying, ‘Get here!’ and I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ She was screaming, it was his best friend’s mom, and she was like, ‘Kenny just got shot!” Fite recalled.
Hatcher, 18, was killed in a drive by shooting on the front porch of his family’s home.
Fite told News 2 she will never forget the moment when doctors told her that her son was gone.
“She told me he did, he didn’t make it. I said, ‘Didn’t make what?’ And I was just tugging on her arm and patting on her leg,” said Fite.
Fite said something needs to be done to save precious lives.
“It’s like people aren’t really seeing what’s going on. They are babies, our babies. They are from ages 18 and 19 and under,” said Fite.
