MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) – A statue of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest that the Memphis City Council voted to remove has been vandalized again with spray paint.

The vandal painted the words “Aw Go What” on both sides of the statue’s base Thursday night.

The Commercial Appeal reports 43-year-old Leo Awgowhat was arrested Friday. He was charged with desecration of a venerated object and trespass or injury to a cemetery property.

Two days earlier the City Council had voted to remove the politically charged monument from Health Sciences Park.

Earlier this month, someone painted “Black Lives Matter” on the front of the statue’s base, but that had been scrubbed clean.

According to a Memphis Police incident report, an officer spotted the vandalism at 1:34 a.m. Friday during his directed patrol of the park.
