RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – After a Smyrna mother told News 2 the Confederate flags on her son’s high school campus made her fear for his safety, students responded.
James Evans, the Director of Communications with Rutherford County Schools, said Monday that all students who “previously chosen to display a Confederate flag on their vehicles at Stewarts Creek High School have removed them while on campus.”
Evans said one student’s flag remained Monday morning but that student also “voluntarily removed the flag during the school day.”
The removal of the flags comes after the mother, who chose not to share her identity, told News 2 she found the flags upsetting.
“I just don’t think it should be in schools,” she previously said, saying she would like to see a policy change.
While the flags are allowed at Stewarts Creek High School, some schools ban it in Cheatham County, including Cheatham County Middle School, Harpeth Middle School, and Sycamore Middle School.
