NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – While many Tennesseans celebrate the first day they can buy wine in grocery stores, there could be a bill at the state capitol next January that would allow wine sales on Sunday.

“For the last six months, a lot of people have been asking that question and that is probably something we will consider in session next year, ” said Sen. Bill Ketron, who spent seven years convincing other lawmakers to pass legislation allowing wine sales in grocery stores.

Not so sure about Sunday wine sales is House Speaker Beth Harwell, who was supportive of the law that went into effect Friday.

“As for future plans, I think we should take this one step at a time,” she told News 2 while taking part in the wine sales celebration at the Green Hills Kroger. “In fairness to liquor stores, they are not being asked to sell their product on Sunday. I think we need to be happy where we are.”

Wine buyer Erin Holcomb said she had not thought much about Sunday sales while shopping at Kroger.

“I don’t know how I am feeling about it,” she first said, but then added, “You can buy beer on Sunday, why not wine?

Those are the kind of words Sen. Ketron said he will need to hear if he decides to sponsor legislation for Sunday wine sales.

As for wine sales on the first day, an industry figure said Kroger may sell at $300, 000 worth of wine across the state, but another observer said it could go up to a half million for the day.

Anecdotally, about every other cart at the Green Hills Kroger had at least one bottle of wine in it.
