NASHVILLE, Tenn.–State Correctional Officers say they’re willing to put their jobs on the line to expose unsafe working conditions. On Wednesday, a small group of employees went door-to-door meeting with state lawmakers. Employees say they’re being forced to work overtime…but under a new pay scale in which it can take weeks to get the extra money. Officers say the Department of Correction has a staffing problem that puts everyone at risk. Correctional Officer Tyler Nelson says “people fall asleep on the job sometimes and that’s just an accident waiting to happen with some of these inmates. They’re just waiting to take advantage of somebody.”On Monday Corrections Commissioner Derrick Schofield told lawmakers the department was moving in the right direction and working to address staffing problems at a few of its facilities. Several legislatures are now calling for an investigation into the complaints.
