NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) – The gun show scheduled for January at the Fairgrounds Nashville will go on despite the fair’s board voting to ban them altogether.

“In an effort to engage in continued communication with representatives of the gun shows concerning potential contract terms, we have determined that the best course of action is for the Fair Board to allow the shows currently scheduled for January to take place,” Susan Jones, Metro attorney, told News 2 on Thursday.

The decision comes after Mayor Megan Barry questioned the legality of the ban and a Metro councilman spoke out against it.

The ban came after a meeting last Tuesday between the fairgrounds’ board. Members heard from gun control advocates and decided to rid of the 35-year gun show tradition.

Sen. Brian Kelsey also spoke out against the ban Thursday, requesting an opinion from Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery regarding the legality of banning gun shows from publicly owned fairgrounds.
