NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A Nashville mother is warning other parents about the dangers of apps you’ve probably never heard of.  The woman tells FOX 17 that her13-year-old daughter had been talking to a 26-year-old man for more than a year and she had no idea.

The 13-year-old could text and send pictures, videos, and talk. Her phone is not even activated.

“He clearly showed his intent to have sexual relations with my daughter,” said Shalania McCrady.

McCrady’s daughter communicated with the man using the apps TextMe and kik, “Kik allows the child to take a cell phone that is not even active, an inactive cell phone, and download the app while on Wi-Fi and have a phone number and text message capability.”

“Can you talk to strangers on it?” asked Reporter Sabrina Hall.

“You can but it’s kind of weird,” said Robert Jordan, an Antioch teen. “I’ve had some creepy older men try to message me.”

Kids can even communicate with kik on a i-Pod.

With TextMe, you can send pictures, video and even talk on the phone without a cell plan.

An app called Poke is like Snapchat where messages self-destruct.

On the app Whisper, teens can share their secrets publicly with strangers!

On Shots of Me, strangers can see teen’s selfies and strangers can private message them and even find out their exact location from photos.
“Remember MySpace? Asked Jordan.  “All those sex predators on there? That’s how it is nowadays – just all on those apps.”

It’s a lot for parents to have to worry about.

“It’s a whole lot to know about the apps,” said McCrady.  “Just kind of update yourself. Go online and see what’s out there.”

McCrady says it took another teen to show her the apps and what they hid on her daughters i-Pod and cell phone.

Making it even more challenging, there are even apps out there that can hide the app icons on your child’s phone.
