Midstate drivers battling hazardous conditions as snow continues to fall

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) –

The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has issued a state of emergency as a winter storm pushes through the entire state.

Rain and freezing rain transitioned to a mix of sleet and snow in the Midstate.

Temperatures will fall below freezing by Friday afternoon and evening, and road conditions will remain hazardous through tonight and most of Saturday. The snow will taper off from west to east overnight and into early Saturday morning.

Gov. Bill Haslam closed all state offices on Friday because of the severe weather conditions.

THP Lt. Bill Miller says conditions remain hazardous on Tennessee highways.

Miller is urging drivers to stay off the highway, as stalled or abandoned vehicles cause big issues for emergency vehicles.

“It does make our job extremely difficult, and it does put people at risk,” he said.

If you do have to get out, pay attention to cross streets and mile markers. If you wreck, this information will help crews reach you as quickly as possible.

Make sure to have a full gas tank, additional blankets and coats and snacks in your car. Also make sure to fully charge your phone before you leave.

If you need assistance from THP, call *847 so dispatch can send someone close to you.

Here’s a look at traffic reports that are coming in from all over the Midstate and southern Kentucky.

DAVIDSON COUNTY

Mayor Megan Barry has directed all non-emergency Metro offices to close for the day.

“If you don’t have to be on the roads – don’t be,” said Barry in a news release. “My primary concern is public safety, and the fewer people on the roads, the fewer chances for fatal accidents and delays in service by Public Works and emergency services.”

The Tennessee Highway Patrol says I-40 is “very slick” all across the Nashville district.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, there were more than 220 non-injury crashes between 5 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Twelve of those were injury collisions.

There are so many crashes that MNPD has to give priority to assisting those involved in injury crashes. Drivers involved in fender-benders or non-injury crashes are asked to exchange information and proceed.

“Venturing out now is an extreme risk, you have a risk of being stuck in your vehicle for a significant amount of time,” said MNPD spokesman Don Aaron.

Jenna Smith with Metro Public Works says 28 tow operators are working to clear the roads. Right now, they are focusing on main routes.

Anyone with a specific plowing request is asked to call 615-862-8750.

“If you are out on the roads, please stay far behind the snow plows. Give them room to work,” Smith said.

Here’s the most updated reports from MNPD:

  • Central: Officers actively looking for homeless to assist. I-65 South from I-40 is closed due to jackknifed semi-trucks.
