NASHVILLE, Tenn. – They flew to California to stand toe-to-toe with massive wildfires.
The state division of forestry said close to 40 employees have traveled to the west coast to help local firefighters battle the flames.
“You can see it and feel the heat of it,” said Mike Tummins who returned to middle Tennessee this week. “If you’re right up next to it and you don’t have time to prepare, it’s going to go over you.”
Tummins said he and fellow volunteers took state vacation time to fight the fires in different parts of the western United States.
“If we hadn’t been there at that time, it would have burned hundreds or more acres,” Tummins said.
