NASHVILE, Tenn. (WKRN) – Lots of developers in the Nashville area are busy building up while neighbors in Old Hickory are more concerned about a project aimed at digging down.

A company called Industrial Land Developers, LLC has pulled a Metro permit for mineral extraction, otherwise known as strip-mining.

But the location at Burnett Road is drawing criticism from neighbors.

“Property line for the quarry is just past this tree line right here,” said Amy Pragnell.

It sits near Old Hickory Lake Park where people live and play, and residents believe a quarry would be disastrous for the quality of life and animals nearby.

“It’ll be extremely close to fishing areas, launch areas, wildlife. It’s extremely close,” Pragnell added.

“We’re asking that the children in this area be protected and that their beaches be protected, and we’re asking that the habitat and wildlife be protected,” Jeannie Alexander told News 2.

The state of Tennessee still has to issue a permit for digging and blasting on the site.

Meanwhile, Metro councilman Larry Hagar is pushing a new ordinance that would ban mineral extraction within 1,000 feet of a residential structure or within 2,000 feet of a park.
